Teak and bamboo country, and the place our jungle work is happiest. Most of what we have drawn in Madhya Pradesh sits inside a tiger reserve, at Kanha and at Pench, on sites where the forest sets the terms and the building learns to fit.
Madhya Pradesh is unlike the rest of the record. Elsewhere the buildings are city hotels with a handful of resorts among them; here it is the reverse. Four at Pench, two at Kanha, and one hotel at Chhindwara.
It is also where the whole wildlife thread began. Tuli Tiger Resort opened at Kanha in 1997, and everything built inside the other three reserves has followed from what that site taught.

Kanha and Pench are both in this state and neither is administered like the other. Buffer-zone boundaries, what may be cleared, which approach road may be used and how high anything may stand are decided reserve by reserve, before a plan exists.
Pench complicates it further by straddling the Maharashtra border, so part of the same forest answers to a different state entirely.
A Building Season,
Not a Programme.
The monsoon shuts the approach roads and with them the site. Work happens between October and June or it does not happen, which means the schedule is written around weather rather than around trades. A fortnight lost in May is a year lost.

Who are the top resort architects in Madhya Pradesh?
It depends where the plot sits. A resort inside a buffer zone is a different discipline from one on open land: height is capped, the plan has to disperse instead of stack, the monsoon closes the building season, and the property has to make its own power, water and sewage treatment. So the useful question is not who is best in general, but who has finished a building under those rules and can name it. Ours are listed above, from Kanha in 1997.
Do you only do jungle resorts in Madhya Pradesh?
Almost. Six of the seven named projects in the state are resorts at Pench or Kanha; the seventh is Hotel Accord International at Chhindwara, finished in 2014. The concentration is a consequence of where the reserves are rather than a limit on what the studio takes on here.
How far is your studio from Pench and Kanha?
Pench is under two hours from Nagpur, which is close enough for the same people to be on site and back within a day. Kanha is considerably further, and everything the practice learned about building at a distance it learned there in 1997.
What does the forest department control?
More than most owners expect. The footprint, the height, the dispersal of the plan, what vegetation may be removed and which road construction traffic may use. On a buffer-zone plot those answers arrive before the design does, and a scheme drawn without them is a scheme drawn twice.
Can a resort here run off-grid?
It has to, in effect. Mains power fails and there is no municipal water or sewer, so the design carries its own supply, storage, treatment and fire-fighting reserve. Those systems are drawn in-house alongside the building, which on a site this remote is the only way they end up matching it.
