Kanha is where the jungle work began. Tuli Tiger Resort was drawn here in 1997, on sal forest and open maidan, and everything we have built inside a reserve since has followed from what that site taught.
Tuli Tiger Resort opened at Kanha in 1997, for a client the studio had already been building city hotels for since 1982. Club Mahindra followed in 2010 with Mahindra Prestige Natures Nest.
Kanha is the furthest of the four reserves from Nagpur, and what it taught — services that owe nothing to a municipal supply, a build season that shuts with the rain, a footprint set by the department before the client sees a plan — is what every jungle resort since has been drawn with.

Distance is the argument for keeping everything in-house. What arrives on a site this remote has to have been reconciled before it left the office, because there is no consultant to telephone from the middle of a national park. Architecture, interiors, structure, MEP, fire fighting and landscape are drawn together or not at all.

Is Kanha too far for a Nagpur practice?
It is the furthest the studio works, and that is a fair question to ask any architect. The answer is in how the work is organised rather than in the distance: everything is drawn in one office, so what arrives on site has already been coordinated.
What makes a Kanha site different from Pench or Tadoba?
Chiefly the distance and the department. Kanha is administered separately, and a longer supply line means materials and trades have to be planned further ahead against the same closing monsoon.
