A cream classical block on a landscaped Raigarh approach, built around a deep porte-cochère and a glazed bay running the full height of the front.

The entrance does the work. The porte-cochère is deep enough to hold arriving cars out of the weather and wide enough for them to arrive together, which is what a Raigarh wedding actually does; its columns are fluted and lit from the base, so the order carries after dark.

Behind it a glazed bay runs the full height of the front, so the centre of the elevation reads as light rather than as more wall. The guest wing steps back and drops in height, keeping the mass off the approach and leaving the entrance as the thing you see first.

A wedding property is sized for its worst hour. The porte-cochère, the parking and the banquet lobby are all drawn for the twenty minutes when the whole party arrives at once, and sit half-used the rest of the year. Getting that ratio wrong is the most expensive mistake in the type.

Planting set into an elevation has to be detailed as a building element rather than as landscape: waterproofing behind it, drainage out of it, and a way for the people who will keep it alive to reach it once the scaffold is down.
